The Iron
Archive

Six volumes on what actually happened to the motorcycle.

The marques that stopped in a single afternoon. The empires built on one stubborn decision. The machines that were right and lost anyway, the men who built them in sheds — and forty years of pub legend put against the record.

168 stories across 349 pages. Every claim traced to a source, and where the record does not settle it, the books say so instead of guessing.

II.

What is in the set

Six volumes. Six different questions.

Each volume asks one question and asks it of every chapter in it. The chapter titles below are real — they are the ones printed in the books.

Volume I — The Lost Marques

Volume I · 24 chapters

The Lost Marques

Manufacturers that stopped. Not the legend about why — the decision, the date, and the document that survives it.

Chapters include

  • GENTLEMEN, TODAY WE STOP
  • THE PROMISE NOBODY WROTE DOWN
  • THEY BLAME THE WRONG MACHINE

24 chapters · five parts · 79 pages

Volume II — The Racing Empires

Volume II · 24 chapters

The Racing Empires

Manufacturers that grew very large. In almost every case the decision that made them is not the one they are celebrated for.

Chapters include

  • HE PROMISED TO WIN A RACE NOBODY THERE HAD SEEN
  • THEY THREW AWAY A FINISHED MOTORCYCLE
  • DUMP IT IN THE NEAREST LAKE

24 chapters · five parts · 77 pages

Volume III — Beautiful Failures

Volume III · 24 chapters

Beautiful Failures

Machines that were a correct answer and lost anyway. What each one was solving, and the exact thing that beat it.

Chapters include

  • NO TYRE IN THE WORLD COULD HOLD IT
  • NO CHAIN — AND THEREFORE NO WAY TO STAND STILL
  • THE INSURERS CALLED IT AN 882

24 chapters · five parts · 77 pages

Volume IV — The Shed Builders

Volume IV · 24 chapters

The Shed Builders

Men who built motorcycles with no factory behind them, and one question asked of every one: what did he know that the factory did not?

Chapters include

  • NO TWO OF THE TEN WERE THE SAME
  • THE EXHAUST PIPE IS NOT A DRAIN
  • HE DOES IT WITH A HACKSAW

24 chapters · five parts · 76 pages

Volume V — Myths, Lies & Pub Legends

Volume V · 45 verdicts

Myths, Lies & Pub Legends

True, mostly true, false — and the verdict that matters most: unproven. Forty years of pub talk put against the record.

Verdicts include

  • Loud pipes save lives
  • Evel Knievel broke 433 bones
  • There is a gentlemen’s agreement limiting motorcycles to 300 km/h

45 verdicts · five parts · 21 pages

Volume VI — The Auction Files

Volume VI · 27 entries

The Auction Files

Hammer price, auction house, date, lot. What people actually paid, and the five completely different things they were paying for.

Lots include

  • 1915 Cyclone board-track racer — the record
  • 1951 Vincent Black Lightning — the Jack Ehret machine
  • The two lots this book refused to print

27 entries · five parts · 19 pages

III.

Where this came from

Nothing here is repeated on trust.

Most of what is written about old motorcycles is written by people repeating each other. A story gets told, then retold, then printed, and after forty years nobody goes back to look. This is the going back.

TrueMostly true FalseUnproven

Written by one person, from documents

There is no publisher behind this and no team. Every volume carries a page saying what its claims came from and what could not be settled, and asks anyone who can show it is wrong to write in. That page is the only credential the archive has, and it is meant to be the only one it needs.

Built from papers, not from books

Winding-up notices and bankruptcy files, auction catalogues and lot notes, trade-press columns nobody has reprinted since, and the recollections of men who were in the buildings when it happened.

Checked in the language it happened in

A great deal of what is wrong in English-language motorcycle writing is wrong because it was only ever checked in English. Zündapp is settled in German, Nimbus in Danish, Velocette in the trade press of the period.

Where the record does not settle it, it says so

Unproven is a verdict in these volumes, not an admission. The difference between “proved false” and “nobody ever checked” is much of what the archive is for. Corrections are recorded, not quietly made.

Questions

Before you order.

What exactly do I receive?

All six volumes as illustrated PDFs — 349 pages in total — delivered the moment your order goes through.

Can I buy just one volume?

No. Each volume has its own price, but the archive is only sold complete. It was written as one set and it reads as one.

Can I read it on a phone or a tablet?

Yes — on anything that opens a PDF. The pages are set large and dark on light, so they hold up on a tablet in an armchair without reading glasses.

Can I print it?

Yes. The volumes are laid out for A4 and print cleanly on an ordinary home printer. There is no copy protection of any kind.

Is this a repair or restoration manual?

Not at all. There are no torque settings and no rebuild sequences here. This is history and storytelling — what happened, to whom, and why.

What happens when new chapters are written?

They arrive at no extra charge, for as long as the archive is being added to. Buy once and every future edition is yours.
